We speak an average of 15,000 words a day – and if you’re anything like me – you want your words to have a positive impact. Words have greater power than what has been originally thought – and has much more impact upon the cultural atmosphere within your business. Recent data has shown that radio frequencies emitted by certain words have an impact upon the atmosphere within an environment – including your organization. Words such as Vision, Mission, Positive, Growth, Excellence, Momentum, Helpful, Understand, Open-Minded all have an empowering effect. Whereas words such as Fault, Blame, Boredom, Overwhelm, Confused, Frustrated are lower on the scale.

Words are everywhere and can be in the form of:

  • Emails drafted;
  • Words used in meetings;
  • Feedback to teams;
  • General conversation; or
  • Performance review.

For instance, when giving feedback to a team member whose action was misaligned with values, your ego may have flared up and instead of having a conversation about values instead boundaries were crossed – sometimes ever so slightly and words were used that can have a negative ripple affect upon the cultural atmosphere.

In doing so, you just established a new cultural value of ‘team members should fear meetings with you – which means that fear becomes the basis of many cultures in organisations.

Alternatively, the leader who is thoughtful with their words and delivers feedback directly without negative emotions, brashness or adult tantrums – they are the ones who will be respected for the care in feedback and will build stronger teams.

Our words have power and we have a responsibility to use them wisely and with care when relating to those around us. Not just for the sake of culture but to be a thoughtful and respectful human being.
