Before I knew how to trust myself when embarking upon new opportunities or taking bigger risks, the only thing I could muster up was to put my trust in what is tried and tested – despite how I felt about me.

And as I did that more and more, I learned how to trust that I could handle bigger problems that came my way. And the more I trusted that I could handle it, the more results I had. And the my team trusted me and themselves.

There are symptoms and signs in all cultural environments of leaders who have trust issues. Not only does their team pay for it. But the business does too. And for managers and leaders, you simply can’t go far without a team.

The truth is that studies show that people STILL don’t trust themselves enough. Whether it is to fully commit to a course of action, a vision or their dream.

Infact, a whopping 70% of intelligent people, while seemingly engaged, are actually disengaged from their desired outcome. From making decisions, taking that leap of faith or simply backing themselves.

Business owners who don’t trust show many signs including:

– Loneliness and isolation, feeling as though they are on their own;
– Misunderstood, believing that no-one understands them or gets them;
– Defensive of their goals, ideas and challenges so they internalise this instead;
– Non-committal to long-term solutions or going deep into creating change;

For those who don’t trust, they are skeptical, they blame and nothing is ever good enough. No-one is ever. They find fault everywhere.

But while others are making decisive and empowering decisions, others stay stuck in a world of procrastination, self-judgement and ultimately, diminished results that have an expiration date.

So instead, they sabotage. They take an unnecessary winding road. They rationalise it by believing that if they are not burning themselves out that they aren’t ‘working hard enough’. Because they won’t ask for real help.

Or that the answer to a long-standing problem can’t be as simple as what is right in front of them. And so they continue conditioning themselves to keep looking for something shinier, more spectular and magical. Never actually finding the metaphorical pot of gold.

The truth is that when we look outside ourselves to live an empowered life and lead fearlessly we must change our Inner World Realty and choose to redefine our experience.

Those who upgrade their thoughts, emotions, beliefs and attitudes are those who take the journey to trust self more and take new risks are quite simply, those who get results. They build increasingly healthy and functional relationships with their collegues, their teams. And they are trusted with the problems as well as the goals of others.

Characteristics of business managers and leaders who trust themselves include:

– Speed in decision making as they don’t second guess or worry about ‘if’ they can handle it;
– Wisdom and discernment in the knowing that with each new opportunity, there’ll be things that won’t go according to plan;
– Emotional reality as they acknowledge that there will likely be judgment or criticism but they take action regardless;
– Disruptive and innovative as they embrace organised chaos and create new breakthrough moments

Anything other then these characteristics is simply self-sabotage. And for a business leader, it can cost you more then simply your sense of self. It can cost you your business and your reputation.

We turn off the light to possibility when we refuse put ourselves in new situations, create new opportunities and embrace vulnerability.

The truth is that the results you want will come when you start de-cluttering your mindset.
